“Green Smoothies” are the greatest natural, healthy food to come along during my lifetime, and I just thought of a fun way to add zest to them with some “magic dust.”
Do you remember Cheech and Chong’s magic dust from their christmas bit about how Santa Claus “got off” with his reindeer? Well, this is along the same line, but in this case the magic dust is legal, and is already being used in another form by most people in the world.
First, in case you don’t already know, I will teach you how to make a great green smoothie. Even though the “magic dust” is the very first ingredient into your dry Vita-Mix, I will save it’s introduction to the end of this post.
For a “standard” green smoothing I begin with 2 cups of cold water and from 1/2 to 1 cups of raisins dumped into the Vita-Mix. Put the lid on TIGHT, flip it to high and power on. Let it liquefy until you no longer see pieces of raisin—just a brown liquid.
Next I STUFF the Vita-Mix with green greens, like spinach, chard, kale, parsley, beet greens, etc. The greener the better! (It usually takes 6 to 8 oz. of greens to stuff it full.) Again, I put it on the highest speed and liquefy the contents.
While the Vita-Mix is doing it’s thing, I take two frozen bananas from the freezer, turn the speed down to about half and drop them through the small hole in the lid. (These were peeled and cut into quarters before freezing.) You can use room-temperature bananas, but I appreciate the extra chill that frozen ones add to the mix.
Next I add about a cup of ice cubes through the hole in the lid, still running at about half speed. Varying the speed up and down will help assure that all the ice gets ground up.
(Important note: If you are trying this with a blender, thinking that it will do what a Vita-Mix will do, beware that the ice may destroy your blender …)
The green smoothie is now ready. If you like milkshakes, but don’t like what milk and icecream do to your body, you will absolutely love green smoothies!!
And now, the “Magic Dust” …
Into your DRY Vita-Mix, before adding anything else, put in a heaping tablespoon of organic coffee beans. Put the lid in place, put it on the highest setting and let it run until the coffee has become a “magic dust” floating around in the Vita-Mix. Then proceed with the water, raisins, etc … you will get a super-kick from the whole coffee, blended in your body with the healing, calming effect of the greens. I wouldn’t recommend that you do this every day, but it certainly is fun from time to time.
Enjoy life NOW. This is NOT a rehearsal!
