Our “Bouncing Buddy,” a 14 year old black Lab, says “Don’t believe that dogs can handle spoiled food!’ Some soup in an electric crock-pot lost power and sat for about 2 days.
Being unaware of the length of time it had been unplugged, my wife mixed it with the morning dog food as a treat. Unfortunately, no-one who knew how long it had been unplugged was around at the time. Thinking that dogs were able to “handle” food that is slightly spoiled, she thought nothing of it. The key phrase here is “slightly spoiled,” which this had gone well beyond.

Rocky, our other Lab, simply would not eat the mix, and went the day without food. Unfortunately for Buddy, his trust and hunger overcame his innate senses and knowing, and he ate some of the tainted food.. Within a few hours he became violently ill. This degenerated into complete weakness. Our “Bouncing Buddy” couldn’t even stand, let alone walk out to the yard to vomit.

My work schedule allowed me to tend to Buddy. I made certain he always had fresh water available, and encouraged him to drink. I also began giving him small doses of Dynamite “Dyna-Pro” probiotic (to restore his normal stomach biological functions), Dynamite “Trace Minerals” (to stop the growth of the bad bacteria and also stop any internal bleeding that may occur), and Lorand Laboratories “BiAloe” (to super-charge his immune system) diluted in clean water. I used a roast basting syringe to “tube-feed” him these individual dilutions throughout the day. Even though he vomited some of it back out, I knew that whatever residue remained would be extremely beneficial to his healing.

By that night, his survival seemed unlikely, but we did our best anyway. He was unable to stand or walk, had a severe fever, and was very unresponsive. My wife and I made a sling from a blanket to take him outside. We held him up, hoping that he would urinate, but that didn’t happen. We would then bring him back into our bedroom to afford him whatever comfort could come from being with us.

He was showing signs that the house was way too warm for him. We lifted him with the sling and moved him out onto a nice, cool grassy area in our front yard, beside the sidewalk. I rolled a recliner out onto the walk beside him, wrapped myself in a few blankets and spent the entire night beside him. He had been a good and loyal friend to me for many years, and I wanted to be there for him as long as he needed me. I spent the entire night awake, occasionally caressing him or speaking encouraging words to him. He was so ill that I expected him to pass at any moment.

As daylight began to break, exhaustion finally overcame me and I fell asleep. Then I heard him begin to rustle a bit. I opened my eyes to see him struggling to get up. His front legs were shaky, but working. He was unable to raise up on his hind legs. I joyfully jumped up and helped lift him up onto all fours.

He slowly, shakily, painstakingly walked into the “potty yard” where he urinated for a long time, then sprayed out the most vile, disgusting, horrid-smelling diarrhea that anyone could possibly imagine. He took a few more steps, then went back down to the grass. After a few minutes of rest, I encouraged him to move to a cleaner area by lifting his rear end. We returned to the grass by my chair. This time when he laid down he held his head up, panting. I knew the worst was over, so long as I could continue to get the rescue supplements into him

There was no way he was strong enough to go up the steps to the doggie door. I assembled a bed for him under the patio cover with a pallet, a large piece of foam rubber and a blanket. With my help, he was able to get on it and lay down. Then I constructed a ramp for him from the ground to the dog door, and covered it with a rug to give him traction. Meanwhile, he was very content to be outside on his newly constructed bed, and showed no interest in the ramp.

Periodically throughout the day I repeated the “tube feedings” of Dynamite “Dyna-Pro” probiotic, Dynamite “Trace Minerals” and Lorand Laboratories “BiAloe.” I also encouraged him to drink clean, fresh water about every half hour by bringing a shallow bowl (large Corning ware frying pan, actually) near his mouth. He would invariably drink some, which also resulted in him needing to pee a lot.

Since he was still unable to raise up on his hind legs, I remained with him most of the time for the next few days. I rigged up a closed circuit TV camera so that I could monitor him while I was working in my office. Whenever I would see him stir, I would run out and see how I could help. He always appreciated the assistance with standing to go pee and with getting a drink, but he always resisted the basting syringe filled with supplements. Since he would not take the stuff on his own (the trace minerals are really bad tasting) I continued to force-feed them to him. As I did, he continued to improve hour-by-hour.

One thing Buddy had going for him is that he has been eating the highly-nutritious Dynamite Dog Foods every day for several years. This helped him build up a reserve of essential minerals. Without that critical reserve, he certainly would not have survived. We had made the decision to spend a little more on the Dynamite foods primarily to help them smell better, itch less, be rash-free, be resistant to parasites and have shinier coats. Now we were able to add “survival” to the “reasons to buy Dynamite” column.

It was about two weeks before Buddy started being himself again. He didn’t eat anything for about a week. During this time I continued to baster-feed him the supplements and pro-biotic. I offered him a small amount of fresh food each morning and night, but he would decline and walk away. No doubt his stomach was still in turmoil, but I suspect that there was a trust issue going on also. Finally he ate about a tablespoon of his food. Then he began eating more and more each feeding.

Now, about a month later, Buddy is back to bouncing for his dinner, then licking his bowl clean. His energy and physical strength is back to normal, and we are again having to limit the amount of food he gets to keep him slender. To see him now you would never guess that he was so close to death just weeks ago. Not too shabby for a big black Lab that is over 100 years old in “human-years!”

In summary, here is what we learned from this experience:

Feed your dog the best, most nutritious foods you can find to build up their health reserves (Dynamite Dog Foods).

Never feed dogs any food that you wouldn’t eat yourself, regardless of what you hear about them being able to handle it.

If your dog acts funny about what you have fed them, go take it away and throw it out.

Always keep an emergency supply of Dynamite “Dyna-Pro” probiotic, Dynamite “Trace Minerals” and Lorand Laboratories “BiAloe” on hand. If we did not have all three of these products on hand when he needed them, I am certain that we would now have “buried Buddy” instead of our wonderful “Bouncing Buddy,” who we are now even more delighted to be enjoying the company of.

You will get a real "kick" out of this optional ingredient in one of the healthiest foods known ...

“Green Smoothies” are the greatest natural, healthy food to come along during my lifetime, and I just thought of a fun way to add zest to them with some “magic dust.”

Do you remember Cheech and Chong’s magic dust from their christmas bit about how Santa Claus “got off” with his reindeer? Well, this is along the same line, but in this case the magic dust is legal, and is already being used in another form by most people in the world.

First, in case you don’t already know, I will teach you how to make a great green smoothie. Even though the “magic dust” is the very first ingredient into your dry Vita-Mix, I will save it’s introduction to the end of this post.

For a “standard” green smoothing I begin with 2 cups of cold water and from 1/2 to 1 cups of raisins dumped into the Vita-Mix. Put the lid on TIGHT, flip it to high and power on. Let it liquefy until you no longer see pieces of raisin—just a brown liquid.

Next I STUFF the Vita-Mix with green greens, like spinach, chard, kale, parsley, beet greens, etc. The greener the better! (It usually takes 6 to 8 oz. of greens to stuff it full.) Again, I put it on the highest speed and liquefy the contents.

While the Vita-Mix is doing it’s thing, I take two frozen bananas from the freezer, turn the speed down to about half and drop them through the small hole in the lid. (These were peeled and cut into quarters before freezing.) You can use room-temperature bananas, but I appreciate the extra chill that frozen ones add to the mix.

Next I add about a cup of ice cubes through the hole in the lid, still running at about half speed. Varying the speed up and down will help assure that all the ice gets ground up.

(Important note: If you are trying this with a blender, thinking that it will do what a Vita-Mix will do, beware that the ice may destroy your blender …)

The green smoothie is now ready. If you like milkshakes, but don’t like what milk and icecream do to your body, you will absolutely love green smoothies!!

And now, the “Magic Dust” …

Into your DRY Vita-Mix, before adding anything else, put in a heaping tablespoon of organic coffee beans. Put the lid in place, put it on the highest setting and let it run until the coffee has become a “magic dust” floating around in the Vita-Mix. Then proceed with the water, raisins, etc … you will get a super-kick from the whole coffee, blended in your body with the healing, calming effect of the greens. I wouldn’t recommend that you do this every day, but it certainly is fun from time to time.

Enjoy life NOW. This is NOT a rehearsal!

Bruce

A growing number of dog and cat owners now know that the best, most nutritious foods they can give their friends is home-made raw foods, as in the “BARF” diet. (Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods.) Very few of these people are willing to invest the time, energy and money to actually feed this, the best, way. In this blog I will pose some of the reasons that I have heard. I invite you to add any of the reasons that I missed, or to confirm the reasons that apply to you …

1. I don’t have the time.
Busy people hesitate to use any of their valuable time doing any more than pouring a pile of kibble into the pet’s bowl. (Hopefully these people will at least learn about the very few actually superior kibbles, like the Dynamite Super Premium Diet for Dogs http://dynamitenutrition.com.) They usually ultimately spend much more time later, transporting their pets to the vet and hanging out in the waiting room, but that extra 10 minutes a day just seems like too much to ask …

2. Give them raw meat? Ewwwww! Yuuuk!
I must admit that this one even gets me when I feed raw chicken to my animals. How is it that I forget just how disgusting chicken is between taking it out of the package raw and taking it off of the grill? I don’t mind it at all when feeding raw beef, and I only give a small amount of consideration to trichinosis from raw pork, but I need to look the other way when they gobble down those fowl leg quarters!

3. They cant’ be getting value from raw veggies, ’cause it’s still whole in their stool.
This objection has a lot of merit if you are feeding whole or even chopped vegetables. In nature, carnivores/omnivores get most of their vegetables from eating the stomach of their kill, and the pre-chewed, partially digested contents thereof. To compensate for this in our environment, we run the vegetables through our Vita-Mix first, then mix it with their other food. If you have lots of time and patience, you can do a fair job of this in a regular high-speed, high powered blender or food processor. If you don’t, get yourself a Vita-Mix. It will soon become your absolute favorite kitchen appliance! You can get the best prices and free shipping on a brand-new Vita-Mix directly from the Vita-Mix company by going through the “coupon” at
http://www.ph-n.com/tools/vitamix.htm to order it.

4. I have heard that table-foods are bad for dogs.
This is true for SOME of the foods that humans eat. It is a simple matter to get educated about what is good for them and what is not. There are many great books on the subject. Many of them are listed in a special section of Amazon.com at
http://astore.amazon.com/aliwel?_encoding=UTF8&node=4. Anything by Dr. Ian Billinghurst is a sure-fire winner.

5. Their eating area gets so gross when we feed them raw, live foods, and it attracts flies and yellow-jackets!
This is the best evidence that you are feeding them well. Doesn’t it make you wonder when the insects won’t go near the processed foods that you have been feeding? If a bug won’t even eat it, it can’t be very good for your animals.
You can compensate for this by feeding them in an area that is easy to hose off afterward, or on a small rug that you can pick up every few days and run through your washing machine. Of course, have more than one feeding bowl and wash it after each meal, just like you do your own dishes.

… to be continued … (Please help me add to this one. Thanks!)

If you have a sick dog, check this out ...

I am an independent retailer of several lines of high-quality, highly effective nutritional products, including the Dynamite product line for animals, humans, soils and plants. Due to a radio advertisement for the Dynamite Super Premium Diet for dogs (dog food), the Showdown vitamin and mineral supplement and the Dyna-Pro pro-biotic, we have been getting many calls from desperate dog owners hoping that the Dynamite products will heal their pets. The answer is “Maybe, but probably not.” Allow me to explain …

First, you must isolate the CAUSE of your pets illness, then remove it from their (your) environment. If it is a simple as lack of nutrition and probiotics, then Dynamite nutritional products accompanied by some biologically appropriate raws foods (“BARF”) may be all you need. (See http://dynamitenutrition.com).

More than likely, though, the problems are being caused by a toxic environment. Look for things like pressure treated wood in decks, playground equipment, railroad ties, etc. or the use of chemical fertilizers on the lawns and parks that they play on, flea and tic treatments, flea collars, etc., wasp and insect sprays, toxic shampoos, toxic laundry detergents, formaldehyde emissions from your carpets—anything toxic. If you live in an agricultural area, your animals (and you) are getting triple-clobbered.

Water is another common carrier of poisons. All consumed water, from ANY source, should be run through an activated carbon filter to remove the organic chemicals before it is ingested. RO filters also remove most heavy metals, but they leave the water highly acidic, so an alkalinizing filter may be best for you. NEVER allow your pets to drink from irrigation ditches, most streams and rivers. Carry fresh water with you for them whenever you are away from home.

Even your animals food and water dishes may be poisoning them with chemicals that leach from plastic. Ceramic or glass dishes are usually better.

As great as they are for providing essential nutrients, the Dynamite products do little to pull heavy metal poisons from your pets (or your) body. To accomplish that, use a product called “Natural Cellular Defense.” You can learn about heavy metal toxins and the best solution we are currently aware of at http://www.abcompany.com/Waiora/index.htm.

Back to nutrition … Better even than the Dynamite dog food is an intelligently blended raw food diet, including raw, meaty bones. This is a diet that you prepare at home from store-bought foods (preferrably organic or naturally grown). You can learn all you need to know from Dr. Billinghurst’s book “The BARF Diet” which you can choose and purchase from
http://astore.amazon.com/aliwel?_encoding=UTF8&node=4. If you have the time to prepare a BARF diet for your dogs, just use the Dynamite dog food as a snack, or for when you don’t have the time to prepare the raw foods. Adding Dynamite Showdown will help make certain that your dog is getting all the essential nutrients needed, and Dyna-Pro will help maximize digestion so that it can be utilized by the body.

The best tool I know of for raw food preparation is a Vita-Mix. If you don’t have one, check local garage sales, second-hand stores or e-bay. They pretty much last forever, and people who are un-wise enough to sell their used one seldom know their value. If you can’t find a used one, you can at least get free shipping on a brand new one by going to
http://www.ph-n.com/tools/vitamix.htm

If these ideas and solutions don’t fit your needs, feel free to call me at 208-278-5800 between the hours of 8 AM and 6 PM Mountain time. Possibly I can help you identify the cause, and the solution you need.

We also offer you a completely FREE online resource for natural health information. You can plug into it at
http://ph-n.com or http://perfecthealthnaturally.com. Don’t be afraid to give your name and e-mail address … the only complaints we get are that we don’t send e-mail alerts nearly often enough. You will never get swamped by e-mails from me — I am way too busy for that! )
